Couples Counselling at essentia
What is Couples Counselling?
Couples counselling is a means of resolving relationship issues and conflicts that two people have not been able to handle effectively on their own. It involves both partners sitting down to discuss their thoughts and feelings. The aim is to gain a better understanding of yourself and your partner, to decide if you need/want to make changes, and to help enable you to do so.
Couples seek counselling for a range of reasons: every couple is different. Some of the most common reasons include lack of communication, frequent arguments, affairs, unfulfilled emotional needs, financial concerns, loss of affection, traumatic events (illness, loss, redundancy), conflicts from previous relationships, and the imbalance of care and upbringing of children. These may sound like common issues, but couples often seek relationship advice because they are unable to resolve these issues on their own. Other couples seek counselling because of a specific crisis either within or outside of the relationship.
Essentia can help married and unmarried partners with:
- Pre-marital counselling
- Divorce and separation
- Sexual problems
- Financial concerns
- Power struggles
- Extra-marital affairs
- Commitment problems
- Step-parenting challenges
- Previous relationship concerns
- Understanding menopause
- Miscarriage support
How can Couples and Relationship Counselling help?
Positive intimate relationships can provide both partners with support through difficult times. Making a relationship work is no easy matter: couples often feel frustrated and helpless when partners’ needs conflict.
You and your partner can work toward a solution with couples counselling. Caroline provides a private, supportive, confidential counselling service to help you work toward the interpretation and acceptance of you and your partner’s concerns. She will listen to both partners as you express your thoughts and feelings, identifying and addressing problem areas together.
“Caroline supported us to rediscover how to communicate with each other in a sensitive and respectful way. This helped us to understand that the problems in our relationship were not abnormal and helped us to articulate and listen to each other's needs and feelings without judgement. We are so grateful for Caroline's open, supportive and relaxed approach and say a big thank you for showing us the path back to trusting love.” - Mr and Mrs D, Worcester
What is the difference between couples counselling and sex therapy?
Couples counselling focuses on a whole relationship, while sex therapy deals more specifically with the sexual aspect of a relationship. Problems within an intimate relationship can often affect the sexual aspect of it, so this may be discussed in couples counselling. However, a couple may experience sexual problems in an otherwise sound relationship. If this is the case, sex therapy may be beneficial. Which treatment is recommended would be based on an initial consultation.
