Young People at essentia
What is Young People’s Counselling?
During adolescence, young people often find themselves faced with changes and challenges of all types: emotional, social, moral, physical, cognitive and spiritual. This can be a turbulent time for both a young person and the rest of the family as it is common for young people to rebel, experiment and make mistakes.
Stress, such as that brought on by the changes of adolescence, can affect young people’s mental health.
Causes of Stress in Young People
Common sources of stress include:
- Examination anxiety
- Leaving school
- Separation of parents
- Parent with a new partner
Excess stress can potentially lead to:
- Eating disorders
- Self-harm, suicide
- Obsessive behaviours
- Ongoing stress
- Social anxiety
Caroline at Essentia Counselling & Psychotherapy can assist young people in better understanding their situation and re-establishing a feeling of control, balance and connection. Caroline has over 14 years of experience supporting and encouraging young people, allowing them to communicate in a relaxed, non-judgemental environment.
As a mother to two children, Caroline has experienced first-hand the challenges of parenting and is sensitive to the dynamics and pressures that exist within a young person’s life. She is therefore completely aware of the trust and investment it takes for a parent/guardian to refer their loved one for therapy. Talking to a therapist can be a challenge for some young people, so Caroline includes other mediums such as visual aids to help relieve any pressure and make the process smoother, even fun!
"I would like to thank you for giving my husband and me our 15 year old daughter back - we were at the end of our tether with her behaviour and attitude and the whole family were suffering. She is now back on track, happy, healthy and relishing life. Thank you Caroline - we all thank you!" - Mr & Mrs M, Cheltenham
A major concern for most parents/guardians is the fear of losing their connection with their teenage child, for example, feeling that their child no longer wants to talk to them or has become more secretive. It is normal and healthy for young people to want more privacy and to keep thoughts and feelings to themselves. Developing a private self, independent of parents, is a major hallmark of adolescence. However these moments of independence and growth can be bittersweet for parents, similar to leaving a child at daycare for the first time, or being told not to kiss them goodbye at school anymore.
To help with this, Essentia offers counselling for the whole family. Every family encounters obstacles, conflicts or complications that occasionally upset harmony and communication – this is a normal part of family life. Family counselling enables family members to express their thoughts and emotions safely, to understand and explore experiences and to appreciate each others’ needs. This is often done through improving communication within the group and working together to find ways forward for everyone.
